source independence
- CURIE:
gmeow:sourceIndependence - IRI: https://blackcatinformatics.ca/gmeow/sourceIndependence
- Category: property
- Defined by:
gmeow:slices/evidence - Box roles: CBox role, RBox role (What is this?)
The independence status of the source referenced by a citation — independent or self/issuer originated. Non-functional: competing assessments by different standpoints coexist (Principle 9).
Structure
Property shape: object property; gmeow:CitationAct -> gmeow:SourceIndependence
Practical Pattern
Use gmeow:sourceIndependence from gmeow:CitationAct to gmeow:SourceIndependence when the relationship itself belongs in the native GMEOW graph.
Example Snippets
These snippets are generated from canonical slice examples and trimmed to the Turtle blocks where this term appears.

# Worked example: grading citations as evidence. The evidence slice hangs
# quality dimensions on a gmeow:CitationAct (from the citations slice): its
# gmeow:hasEvidenceClass, gmeow:sourceTier (primary/secondary/tertiary),
# gmeow:sourceIndependence and gmeow:coverageDepth together decide whether the
# citation gmeow:supportsNotability. The Wikipedia-notability discrimination falls
# straight out: independent + secondary + significant coverage SUPPORTS it; a
# routine self-originated passing mention does NOT — same predicate, graded.

# --- Strong evidence: an independent trade-press feature with depth → supports.
# The subject (citingEntity, generic Entity) is supported by the cited work
# (citedEntity, a CreativeWork): gmeow:intentSupports reads "the cited work
# supports the citing entity", and the evidence dimensions grade that support.

Usage Advice
Use when
- Use to record whether a cited source is editorially independent of its subject — the axis the kernel's
gmeow:policyPublicOnlyWithIndependentSourcedisclosure policy resolves against in the solver layer (P12).
Avoid when
- Avoid using it as a measure of evidential warrant (
gmeow:hasEvidenceClass) — independence is a notability axis, not a truth axis (Principle 1) — and avoid forcing one assessment; competing standpoint judgements coexist, so it stays non-functional.
How to use
- Point the
gmeow:CitationActat agmeow:SourceIndependenceindividual; the solver reads it together with the kernel disclosure policy to gate conditional public release, and competing assessments are kept as separate claims (Principle 9).
